Join Martin Espada as he reads and signs his book of poetry, The Trouble Ball, recipient of the Mitt Kessler Award. Mr. Espada's honors also include the Robert Creeley Award, the National Hispanic Cultural Center Literary Award, the PEN/Revson Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. Weller Book Works will be hosting a multi-media presentation by Russell Stevenson on the life of Elijah Ables. The presentation is based on Mr. Stevenson's article “A NEGRO PREACHER”: THE WORLDS OF ELIJAH ABLES, due to be released in the Spring issue of Journal of Mormon History. From the article about Elijah Ables: "As one of the first African American priesthood holders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he evoked strong loyalties and rabid hatred." Russell Stevenson is an instructor at Salt Lake Community College. He received his M.A. from the University of Kentucky in 2009.
